ID3 Interior components and connections.

October 10, 2020

ID3 1st edition deliveries are well underway (and I have had my 1st edition for almost a month now!). Lets go thru the different sections of the interior and look at whats under the surface and how all the components are connected together.

4 things we learned by looking at the schematics:

  1. The little bump below the center console is a temperature sensor. I always wondered what this was and initially thought that this was some form of motion sensor. However looking at the schematics we can see that the interior motion sensor is overhead and that the little bump is in fact a temperature sensor.
  2. The schematics show that the ID3 has a chip card reader in the second cup holder (component #2 in front center console). If this hardware is in the 1st edition cars then it infers that VW will push an update some time in the future that will allow you to start the car using a RFID card instead of having the key with you all the time. If this hardware is not in the 1st edition perhaps this is something VW will look to offer in future editions of the ID3.
  3. The front camera and sensor cluster on the windscreen has its own little windscreen heating system. This should prevent any snow or ice blocking the view from the camera.
  4. While there is not official support for retrofitting the inductive phone charger, the part is orderable and I think lots of people will mod their ID3 to add in support for the inductive charger. (Only a matter of time before there are 3rd party versions)

Warning I don't work for VW and these schematics are here for informational purposes only. Not all ID3 cars have the same exact equipment levels and these schematics are not universally applicable. **All images and details are the property of VW and neither myself or evflux is in any way associated with VW.

Interior front left for right hand drive models

The passenger side is a little more interesting. Item #6 is interesting as it is called out as being the control unit for a chip card reader. Note that this is not the control unit for the key detector. There is also a fan for all the infotainment electronics that blows into the passenger foot well.

Left footwell - LHD

Looking at the foot well for LHD cars, again we see a reference to a chip card reader. #8 shows the OBD-II connector which is of a lot of use.

Item Description

Dash panel, LHD models

Looking at the dash panel we can see the ID light and the HUD components. I was really curious as to what #7 was when i got my car and here we can see that it is in fact a temperature sensor. The ID3 has temperature sensors in both the main front vents and the one in the middle here serves as the cabin temperature sensor.

7 Vehicle interior temperature sensor - G1090 -
8 Light 2 for dash panel contour lighting - L244 -
9 Control unit with display unit for driver information system - J1254 -

Front centre console, LHD models

The center console is also very interesting. As expected we can see #3 is the interior arieal for the entry and start stop system. If your ID3 does not detect your key, you can just place your key in the first cup holder and this sensor will detect the key and allow you to start the car even if the keyless system is not functioning.

Much more intersting is the chip card reader unit that is labeled in what appears to be cup holder #2. So far there has been no mention of the ID3 supporting a chip card so the exact fucntion of this component is unknown. Perhaps in future VW will push a software update that allows you to start and drive your card with your We Charge card? What do you think this is for, leave your guess in the comments at the end!

We also see the wireless charging module (#6) that is installed in some ID3 cars. This is available as a part for the ID3 so as mentioned before it should be possible to find a garage that will either retrofit the charger or even install a 3rd party charger in its place.
